NANKING MASSACRE

The Nanking Massacre was a mass slaughter and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against the residents of Nanjing (then spelled "Nanking"), China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The atrocity took place over several weeks starting in December 1937 and resulted in an estimated death toll of 200,000 to 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers. The event is widely considered one of the worst atrocities committed by the Japanese military during World War II and is a major source of historical tension between Japan and China.

                               

                                                           

The Nanking Massacre is also known as the "Rape of Nanking" because of the widespread sexual violence committed by Japanese soldiers against Chinese women. In addition to mass killings, the Japanese army also engaged in widespread looting, arson, and destruction of the city. Despite the scale of the violence, only a small number of Japanese soldiers were ever brought to trial for their actions in Nanking, and the Japanese government has been criticized for not fully acknowledging the extent of the massacre and for failing to properly educate its citizens about the event.

The Nanking Massacre remains a sensitive issue in Japan-China relations to this day and is the subject of ongoing debates and historical research. Some nationalist groups in Japan deny or downplay the extent of the violence, while in China, the massacre is widely remembered and studied as a symbol of Japanese aggression and violence during the war. The event has been documented in several books, films, and other media, including Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking" and the documentary "Nanking."
